Introduction To OET Writing

Introduction To OET Writing

OET Writing is primarily categorized into three types:-

1. Referral Letter

2. Discharge Letter

3. Transfer Letter

Regardless of the letter type, the approach to writing an OET letter remains consistent.

A referral letter is usually addressed to a new medical professional, requesting specific care, investigations, or management for the patient. An urgent referral letter follows a similar format, but the order of information presented is slightly different to emphasize the urgency.

Introduction

A) Normal Referral Letter:

  • Thank you for seeing Mr. Oliver, a 42-year-old forklift driver, who wants to return to work after a back injury. Your assessment of his workplace suitability would be highly appreciated.
  • I am writing to refer Joshua, a 2-month-old male infant, presenting with constipation and symptoms suggestive of mild dehydration. Your further assessment and management would be highly appreciated.
  • Thank you for seeing Mr. Richard, a 60-year-old retired academic, presenting with a very painful left first toe consistent with gout. Therefore, your evaluation is needed.

B) Requesting an Urgent Assessment:

  • I am writing to request an urgent review of Ms. Michelle, a 24-year-old lady, who has demonstrated features suggestive of hypothyroidism, most likely Grave's disease.
  • Thank you for seeing Mr. [Name], who is experiencing an acute exacerbation of asthma and pneumonia. Your urgent management is highly required.

C) Two Associated Conditions on Referral:

  • Thank you for [Patient's Name], whose symptoms are suggestive of severe depression and possible bipolar disorder. Your assessment is crucial.
